Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Taoist philosophy is the foundation of Acupuncture theory. There’s evidence that acupuncture was practiced with stone needles 2000 years ago! While an ancient art, the practice of acupuncture evolved over time. It is now being studied around the world to determine the conditions it can best treat. Acupuncture is frequently used in China and Taiwan jointly with Western medicine and is increasingly being recommend by doctors in the West.

How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture relies on the theory of Qi (pronounced “chee”), energy that moves through the body via channels. According to this theory,  blockage or deficiency in the energy flow can lead to discomfort and disease. This flow can be influenced by inserting very fine single use sterile disposable needles at certain points in the body, Treating these acupuncture points rebalances the client’s Qi and brings about healing.

Many studies have been conducted to determine the reasons for acupuncture’s effectiveness in Western science. One theory states that
acupuncture blocks nerve conduction. Another theory suggests that endorphins, the brain’s “feel good” hormones, are responsible for the
acupuncture’s effects. Although we don’t know how it works exactly, acupuncture has been proven to be very effective over the millennia.

What to expect from an initial treatment

A visit to a Chinese medical practitioner is quite different from a Western doctor. A first visit lasts between one and one-half hours. It includes a thorough history and a treatment. The acupuncturist will look at your tongue and take your pulse.

After the initial visit and evaluation are completed, the client lies covered on a treatment table and the Chinese medical practitioner inserts single-use disposable needles into selected points of the patient’s body.  Acupuncture is very relaxing and many people fall asleep.

Our acupuncturist offers free 10 minute consultations over the phone to answer any questions you may have.

Benefits of Acupuncture

Many people find it beneficial in controlling a wide range of painful conditions, in fact the National Institute of Health (NIH) has many articles about the benefits of acupuncture.
